In the 1920s, D. P. Riabouchinsky attempted to promote his inventions in England and the United States and to sell the patent for their commercial use. In 1923–1924, the invention of a pre-combustion rocket attracted the interest of various engineering firms; however, in 1940, D. P. Riabouchinsky received a categorical response stating that his invention was not innovative and that science had advanced since then. After the end of World War II, D. P. Riabouchinsky engaged in a long-running dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense, claiming that his invention had been used by the Americans during the war: “During the war, the U.S. Army used various versions of my invention. The very term ‘rocket launcher’ speaks for itself and was first introduced by me. After Victory Day, the press paid a great deal of attention to this new type of weapon—for example, the ‘bazookas’—but, to my knowledge, my name was never mentioned in connection with this invention. ” In 1956, Dimitri Riabouchinsky again attempted to sell his invention to American companies, but discovered that his patent had been suspended in 1945. A long battle ensued with various government agencies in an effort to reactivate the patent. • Three copies of D.P.
