Emile DRAIN LOT Emile DRAIN (1890–1966). The “Napoleon of the screen,” who notably portrayed the Emperor in Sacha Guitry’s films; a great stage actor who was also a writer and poet. Incoming correspondence. A collection of several original letters, sometimes accompanied by their envelopes with addresses and stamps, received by Emile DRAIN from the Comédie-Française, including some letters partially typewritten on letterhead, relating to theater and publishing -2 original letters from Henri Gaubert, then still a young author of the second half of the 20th century, who wrote notably about Napoleon, dated 1949. In-12 and in-4 formats, 4 pp. - 2 large typewritten and signed letters on letterhead from the Association of Writers Who Served in the Wars of 1914–1918. 2 sheets, dated June 1924, with an addressed and stamped envelope (bearing the postmark of the 1924 Paris Olympic Games). -An autograph letter signed (ALS) from the Secretary General of the Théâtre de l’Odéon, October 5, 1916, on letterhead from the Théâtre National de l’Odéon. 1 folded folio, with its addressed envelope bearing a postmark. During the war, Émile Drain was a corporal on the General Staff, stationed in Rennes, Ille-et-Vilaine. - A large typewritten and signed letter on letterhead, likely written during or shortly after World War I (1914–1918), from the OEuvre Française & Populaire des Trente ans de Théâtre (Paris). 1 page, with a few creases and stains. - A large typewritten and signed letter from Editor-in-Chief G. de Pawlowski, on letterhead printed in red and black, from *La Comoedia*, a daily illustrated literary and arts criticism journal, with its addressed and stamped envelope. 1 ff., Paris, January 25, 1911. Jules LEVY (1857–1935). Lot of 3 P.A.S. -2 autograph letters addressed to Emile DRAIN (1890–1966), “The Napoleon of the Screen,” who notably portrayed the Emperor for Sacha Guitry—a great actor who was also an author and poet. 2 pp., envelopes with addresses and stamps, 1926 and 1927. One on the letterhead of the Syndicat des Gens de Lettres; a very nice, rather literary thank-you letter. Villers-sur-Marne, 1927. The other letter addresses the shared admiration that Drain and Levy have for the work and life of Maurice Rollinat, a poet, musician, and performer who died in 1903. An association was indeed founded to honor him, and it still exists today. Levy thanks Drain and his wife for attending the unveiling of the poet’s plaque in Châteauroux. He mentions the organization and Drain’s wife, and would like Drain to stop by and chat with him —self-addressed envelope with Jules LEVY’s address as secretary of the Syndicat. Minor stains or crease marks. Jules Levy (1857–1935), French publisher and writer, founder of the Arts Incohérents movement—a witty response to the Decadent movement in painting—and secretary-general of the Syndicat professionnel des Gens de Lettres. Associated with the Montmartrois and the Hydropathes
