PARIS. [COULON] [Album of reproduced daguerreotypes, illustrated with views of Paris, in deluxe prints, with text]. Paris, Imprimerie de Bruneau, (available from the publisher and major newsstands)(1840). Small oblong folio (23.5 x 33 cm), 1 blank leaf, 11 pp., and 5 black lithographs, mounted on paper with border patterns. Contemporary pine-patterned half-maroquin with corner pieces, double gilt fillet on the covers, smooth spine decorated in the Romantic style, gilt title “Daguerréotype,” covers of handmade paper (slight wear from use on the binding, some marginal browning on the plates; the text is slightly more damaged, and the title page is missing). Work described as “Extremely Rare.” Lithographs in deluxe proofs, printed in black on so-called “silvered” paper designed to imitate the appearance of a daguerreotype from the early days of photography. Our copy is more complete than the one held by the Carnavalet Museum. Only one copy is listed in the CCFr (BnF). Four of the views measure 18 x 24.2 cm, and four are accompanied by two pages of explanatory text providing the title of each lithograph. -View of the Place de la Concorde, signed Villeret and Thierry frères. -View of the Galerie du Louvre, etc., etc., signed L. Courtin Villeret and Thierry frères -View of the Hôtel de Ville, signed J. Jacottet and Lith Coulon. -View of the Church of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul. (13.8 x 17.5 cm) Lith by Thierry frères after Monthelier. -[The Arc de Triomphe]. Early print, without text. There are three known copies of this publication: one is held at the Carnavalet Museum, the second is in the collections of the George Eastman House in Rochester (along with four plates identical to those at the Carnavalet), the third and final copy is at the Alinari Museum in Florence and includes a fifth lithograph based on a daguerreotype depicting the Arc de Triomphe. The Rochester copy contains notes by the collector Gabriel Cromer, who notes that the work is “extremely rare” and that it was published “before Noël-Marie Paymal Lerebours’s *Excursions daguerriennes* (circa 1840–1843).” Our copy corresponds to the one in Florence.
