Obverse: Head of Louis-Philippe I facing right, wearing an oak wreath; one end of the ribbon tying the wreath behind his head extends down to the base of his neck. Circular inscription: “LOUIS PHILIPPE I KING OF THE FRENCH.” Signed “DOMARD. F.” below the neck against the rim. Reverse: The face value and the year inscribed on three lines in the center of the field: “5 / FRANCS / 1838,” the whole encircled by a wreath tied with a ribbon at its base, formed of a laurel branch on the left and an olive branch on the right. At the tip, below the knot, the mint mark “W” (Lille) on the right, preceded by Smooth edge with the inscription engraved in relief: “★ ★ ★ GOD PROTECTS FRANCE.” Diameter: 37 mm. Weight: 24.70 g.
