19TH-CENTURY POETRY. LITERATURE. LATOUR (Antoine Tenant de). Complete Poems. *La Vie intime*. Miscellaneous Poems. *Loin du foyer*. Paris, Charpentier, 1841. (7)-320 pp. Small in-12 format (18.3 x 12 cm), contemporary red half-maroquin, ribbed spine decorated with double gilded floral panels, gilded title, laid paper endpapers, finely speckled edges. A rare edition, finely executed, in an elegant contemporary binding. The first and only collection of Latour’s poems. Includes 3 prefaces, including the 2 prefaces from previous editions of *Vie intime*. Contains an unpublished section, “Loin du Foyer.” The son of the bibliophile publisher Jean-Baptiste de Latour, Antoine (1808–1881) served as tutor to the Duke of Montpensier and later as his first secretary. A man of letters and translator with a passion for Spain and Italy, he helped introduce several of their writers to the French public. But he was also a very close friend of the Symbolist Aloysius Bertrand, who died in 1841. The book concludes with a curious eulogy (pp. 309–318): "Poets Who Died Before Their Time," but the book’s first preface clearly indicates that the editorial work was completed in the winter of 1840. Some wear, particularly on the top edge and the corners. Foxing on part of the book.
