BAUDIER (Paul, ill.), MAUPASSANT (Guy de). *Sur l'eau*. Paris: La Trirème, 1951. In-4. Loose-leaf volume with a replaced cover and a slightly worn slipcase. An illustrated volume featuring 40 original color woodcuts by Paul Baudier, including 10 as inserts and 30 in the text. Printed in an edition of 201 copies; this is one of the copies from the non-commercial print run on rag paper. The illustrations depict seaside scenes and seascapes with sailing ships. Paul Baudier was a tireless worker and left behind a considerable body of work as a draftsman, painter, engraver, and illustrator. He trained many students in engraving, including his son Albert-Pierre, who went into partnership with Marthe Fequet, a printer and typographer. Their publishing house, La Trirème, would go on to print the major works of the greatest 20th-century French masters. Included are: - BARBEY (Valdo). *Lettres à Julien. Flandres et Sicile*. Paris, H. Lefebvre, 1950. Oblong quarto, loose-leaf, with a replaced cover and the publisher’s slipcase. 20 color lithographs. Printed in an edition of 200 copies; this one is a “Hors-commerce” copy signed by the artist. Autographed dedication by the author and artist to Jacques Guignard. An archivist, paleographer, and erudite humanist, Jacques Guignard (1912–1980) devoted his career to the National Library, where he directed the Printed Materials Collection before heading the Arsenal Library from 1961 to 1980. Combining a deep knowledge of the history of the book with a rare artistic sensibility, he enriched and promoted the heritage collections while playing a pioneering role in the development of international bibliophilia. Experts: Loup Axmann and Jean-Luc Boisseau
