(R) A LARGE STANDING STUCCO DIGNITY, CHINA, TANG DYNASTY, 8TH TO 10TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 69 cm Wide 26 cm Depth 20 cm Weight: 10.7 Kilograms with wood base A tall standing figure in pale stucco-like material, shown frontally on a rectangular base with hands gathered before the chest. The youthful face is framed by an elevated hairstyle, while long robes fall in vertical folds to the feet. Traces of colour and darker surface deposits remain in the recesses, giving depth to the otherwise light-toned modelling. The reverential gesture and composed stance recall attendant figures in Chinese Buddhist sculpture, where a subsidiary presence helps establish the solemn atmosphere of a larger sacred ensemble. The figure's expressive strength lies in the gentle inclination of the head and the contrast between still hands and the flowing folds of the robe.
