TWO INDIAN BRONZES ORISSA 1850'S Dimensions: Height 3,5 - 6 cm Weight: 121 grams Two small Indian bronze devotional figures, strikingly different in silhouette despite their shared miniature scale. The taller figure stands frontally within an open architectural frame with a peaked top, the body elongated and the features reduced to strong, simple forms. Beside it is a more compact multi-armed deity, modelled in the round and surrounded by projecting attributes, one of which extends diagonally from the lower right side. Both surfaces are dark brown with lighter areas of wear on the raised details. Small bronzes of this kind were especially suited to private devotion. Their portability allowed sacred imagery to accompany daily life rather than remain confined to a temple setting. At such a scale, the sculptor had to compress iconography into a few decisive elements: crown, gesture, number of arms, attribute and the outline of the surrounding shrine become more important than minute naturalistic detail. The appeal of the pair lies precisely in that concentration. One image depends on the authority of a frontal shrine-like presentation, while the other is more animated and sculptural. Together, the two bronzes offer a compelling glimpse into the extraordinary diversity of Indian devotional sculpture.
