The white interior is left comparatively open, drawing attention to the fine, thin-looking lip and the lightness of the vessel's profile. The painted details follow the curve of the wall, so that the scene changes subtly as the cup is turned. The doucai chicken cup is an especially admired form in Chinese porcelain connoisseurship. Its appeal rests in the contrast between a modest drinking-vessel shape and the narrative charm of its painted decoration.
