(R) THREE CHINESE STOENWARE STORAGE JARS, MING DYNASTY, 14TH - 17TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 9 cm Wide approx. 12 cm each Weight: 932 grams A group of three small stoneware storage jars, each with a rounded globular body, short straight neck and thickened rim. The vessels are covered in dark olive-brown to grey-black glazes that thin irregularly across the shoulders and expose areas of the pale body around the lower sections, giving each jar a slightly different surface character. The simple, robust forms reflect their original utilitarian purpose as containers for the storage and transport of foodstuffs, condiments or other household commodities. Such practical wares were produced in large numbers at regional kilns during the Ming dynasty, yet the variations created by firing, glaze flow and prolonged use give surviving groups an appealing individuality. Surface wear, small glaze losses and firing irregularities are consistent with the functional nature of the vessels.
