AN EARLY SEATED KASHMIR STONE DEPICTING KUBERA Dimensions: Height 21 cm Wide 16 cm Depth 16 cm Weight: 3061 grams A finely carved stone sculpture depicting Kubera, the Hindu god of wealth, prosperity and guardian of the northern direction. The deity is portrayed in a distinctive seated posture, with raised knees and both hands holding ritual attributes. His powerful, compact physique is adorned with elaborate jewellery, including a beaded necklace, ornamental armlets and a richly decorated headdress. The expressive face is distinguished by large almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, finely incised facial hair and an elaborate crown, framed by a circular halo with a carefully carved geometric border. Particularly noteworthy are the intricate details of the ornaments, the rhythmic treatment of the drapery and the boldly modelled limbs, reflecting the distinctive sculptural traditions of early medieval Kashmir. The dark stone surface displays an attractive weathered patina with traces of earthy deposits and age-related wear. The sculpture is mounted on a substantial ochre-coloured stone base, enhancing its striking architectural and sculptural presence. A characterful and unusual example of early Kashmiri stone carving, combining powerful proportions, expressive facial features and richly articulated ornamental details.
