(R) POLYCHROME CARVED NETSUKE Dimensions: Height 5,5 cm Wide 3,0 cm Depth 2,0 cm Weight: 7,9 grams A small carved figure in a lively, almost theatrical pose, dressed in a flowing blue-green robe with touches of red and dark brown. The face is carefully picked out beneath a dark head covering, while one raised sleeve rises beside the head and the other arm gathers the garment across the body. Areas of wear expose the warmer colour beneath the surviving polychromy. The exaggerated sleeves and animated stance give this netsuke a strong silhouette despite its compact scale. Such miniature carvings reward examination from different angles, where gesture, costume and expression combine to suggest a character without the need for a large narrative setting.
