(R) A LARGE STANDING BRONZE PARVATI , SOUTH INDIA, TAMIL NADU 16TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 60 cm Wide 22 cm Depth 20 cm Weight: 18.770 grams This tall bronze image depicts the standing goddess Parvati. The figure rests upon a circular plinth above a stepped square base, with one hand raised and the other lowered beside the body. A high tiered headdress, prominent jewellery and the closely fitted lower garment enrich the gently curving stance, while worn highlights pick out the face and ornamental details against the dark metal surface. Parvati is an important Hindu goddess associated with divine power, fertility and the household, and her standing images often balance stately composure with subtle bodily movement. The sculptor gives particular attention to the relationship between the slender waist, broad hips and vertical rise of the crown.
