29 - A CHINESE HETIAN YELLOW JADE MELON

A CHINESE HETIAN YELLOW JADE MELON Dimensions: Height 3 cm Wide 6,5 cm Depth 3 cm Weight: 106 grams A small, smoothly polished carving in pale yellow-green stone, shaped as a rounded, gently lobed fruit. The full, softly swelling body is set against an openwork cluster of curling tendrils and leaves at one end, where warmer honey-coloured passages accentuate the carved relief. The restrained modelling allows the translucent appearance and subtle variations in tone to remain central to the object. Fruit and trailing vines are long-established motifs in Chinese decorative carving, often suggesting abundance and continuity through their natural capacity to bear seeds and new growth. Here the compact scale and rounded outline invite close handling, while the intricate scrollwork at one end supplies a lively contrast to the broad, unadorned surface.
