Japan, 20th century Two lacquer boxes: one made of carved wood and lacquered red in the Kamakura-bori style, with the lid decorated with a samurai armor and helmet beneath a plum branch; the other in black lacquer, the lid decorated with gold hira-maki-e and kirikane depicting a medallion of foliage, flowers, and fruit, the latter inlaid with red mother-of-pearl: 24 x 19.5 cm and black: 13 x 18 cm.
