CANE Louis, 1943–2024 Women on the Terrace, Nov. 1983 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right Signed and dated on the reverse with no. 83-544 130 x 97 cm. Expert: MAKET Gallery Description: Born in Beaulieu-sur-Mer in 1943, trained at the École nationale des arts décoratifs in Nice and later in Paris, Louis Cane was one of the founders of Supports/Surfaces, alongside Claude Viallat, Daniel Dezeuze, Vincent Bioulès, Noël Dolla, Bernard Pagès, and Patrick Saytour. As a co-founder of the journal *Peinture, cahiers théoriques* in 1971, he undertook a radical deconstruction of the painting: cut-up canvases, free-form canvases, and the *Sol/Mur* series. In 1977, the Centre Pompidou dedicated its first solo exhibition in France to him, the same year as the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. Beginning in the late 1970s, Cane returned to figurative art and engaged with the history of painting: nudes, Annunciations, Lunches on the Grass, Floods after Michelangelo, and Las Meninas after Velázquez. These scenes, in which the female figure takes center stage, draw inspiration from Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Édouard Manet, and Willem de Kooning. This painting, dated 1983, belongs to this figurative period.
