Paul-Émile PISSARRO (1884–1972) View of a River and Mountain Mixed media on paper Signed lower left 30 x 23 cm (image size) Description: The youngest son of Camille Pissarro and godson of Claude Monet, Paul-Émile Pissarro received instruction from his father and the master of Giverny from childhood onward in Éragny-sur-Epte. He made his debut at the Salon des Indépendants in 1905 and also exhibited in London thanks to his brother Lucien Pissarro. Close friends with Maurice de Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, and André Dunoyer de Segonzac, with whom he traveled, in 1930, on Dufy’s advice, he discovered the landscapes of “Swiss Normandy” around Clécy, where he worked for many years from a studio boat on the Orne River. Rivers, landscapes, and reflections then became his favorite subjects, as seen in this view combining waterways and mountains, in keeping with the family tradition also exemplified by his brothers Georges Manzana and Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro.
