ROBJ - Luxembourg Yellow glazed earthenware pitcher depicting a sailor "Robj" stamp on the base Height: 26 cm. Description: Founded in Paris in 1908 by Jean Born—whose name forms the anagram—the Robj company first made a name for itself with its lighters and perfume burners, before becoming one of the most distinctive producers of Art Deco humor. Under the direction of Lucien Willemetz, who succeeded Jean Born after the latter’s accidental death in 1922, the company expanded its production to include figurines, vials, figurative carafes and pitchers, which was awarded a bronze medal at the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts. Robj did not manufacture its own products; instead, it entrusted the production of its designs to manufacturers such as Villeroy & Boch—including its Septfontaines factory in Luxembourg—or to workshops in Limoges. This role as a designer and publisher brought Robj closer to the art workshops of major Parisian department stores—such as Primavera at Printemps, Pomone at Le Bon Marché, La Maîtrise at Galeries Lafayette, and Studium Louvre—which also had their ceramics produced by manufacturers, such as Longwy for Primavera.
