Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo, known as CORNEILLE (1922–2010) Woman and Animals, 1998 Blue-glazed ceramic print on a beige background Signed and dated "98" in the lower right corner Annotated "Woman and Animals 22/4" on the back of the frame Diameter: 48 cm Framed under glass Description: Born in Liège in 1922 to Dutch parents, Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo, known as Corneille, studied drawing at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. In 1948, he helped found the Reflex group, and then, on November 8 of that same year at the Café Notre-Dame in Paris, he helped found the CoBrA movement alongside Karel Appel, Constant, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn, and Joseph Noiret. The group—which Pierre Alechinsky would later join—advocated for spontaneous art, drawing inspiration from children’s drawings and folk art, until its dissolution in 1951. Having settled permanently in Paris in 1950, Corneille exhibited at the Salon de Mai. He learned the art of ceramics in Albisola under Tullio Mazzotti during the summers of 1954 and 1955. Women, birds, and animals, rendered in flat areas of color and sinuous lines, have since populated his paintings, engravings, and ceramics—to which this piece belongs. The artist passed away in Auvers-sur-Oise in 2010.
