Like its neighbors, Cartier relied on a network of independent workshops: Henri Lavabre, bound to the house by an exclusivity contract as early as 1906; Henri Picq for Belle Époque high jewelry; Verger Frères for toiletries and small objects, Maurice Couet for mystery clocks, and the workshop of Georges Lenfant, a specialist in chains and bracelets, who also worked for Van Cleef & Arpels. The watch movements are supplied by Edmond Jaeger. The Cougar bracelet is part of Cartier’s vast bestiary, dominated since 1914 by the panther—a motif that Jeanne Toussaint, director of fine jewelry from 1933 onward, brought to its zenith. The combination of yellow gold and steel, established by the 1978 Santos, makes this piece a signature of the house’s design in the 1980s.
