The 1981 Springbok Tour was the most volatile peacetime event in modern New Zealand history, triggering 56 days of intense civil unrest that pushed the nation to the brink of a social civil war. The conflict centered on the arrival of South Africa’s national rugby team (the Springboks). Anti-apartheid groups demanded the tour be canceled to protest South Africa’s regime of racial segregation. Conversely, rugby traditionalists and the conservative National government, led by Prime Minister Robert Muldoon, insisted that "sport and politics should not mix".
