Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606 Leiden – Amsterdam 1669), The Return of the Prodigal Son. Etching on laid paper, trimmed, with Basel Crosier watermark (cf. Hinterding, variant A.-a.). (1636). 15.6 x 13.7 cm (sheet). Bartsch 91; White/Boon 91; Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 159 I (of III). Provenance: Probably Prince Henri de Bourbon-Parma, Count of Bardi (1851–1905), Italy; the recto bears the collection stamp (Lugt 336). A fine lifetime impression of New Hollstein’s first state (of three) with sharp lines, before the additional lines were added to the steps of the staircase. The etched landscape in the background is still faintly visible. The parable of the prodigal son is one of the artist’s most beautiful narrative prints. Trimmed to the platemark. – The verso shows traces of a former mounting along the edges; otherwise in good condition. Taxation: subject to differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
