THE AMERICAS AND THE PACIFIC CHATELAIN (HENRI ABRAHAM) A very curious map of the South Sea, containing new and very useful observations not only on the ports and islands of this sea, but also on the principal countries of both North and South America, with the names and itinerary of the travelers who made the journey, large engraved hand-colored wall map on 4 joined sheets, mounted, cropped to the image plate, faded along the fold where tape was removed, toned [Tooley p.130], 820 x 143 mm. (total dimensions), framed, [Amsterdam, 1719, or later] Footnotes: Centered on the Americas, this map stretches from eastern Asia all the way to western Europe, adorned with over 35 vignettes and inset scenes highlighting various regions of the New World. Above the map, a cluster of medallions honors prominent explorers (such as Columbus and Vespucci), while detailed border illustrations surrounding the main view depict major areas of interest and cityscape panoramas. Notably, California is depicted as an island, though a note acknowledges growing skepticism by stating that several authorities considered it part of the mainland.
