CAMARA, SEYNI AWA (born in Diouwent near Oussouye, Senegal, probably in 1945 – 2026, Bignona): Mother figure Fired clay H: 64 cm Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist, Bignona, 2025; private collection, Switzerland. Certificate (copy): Seyni Awa Camara, Bignona, December 6, 2025. Raised in Casamance in southern Senegal, Seyni Awa Camara developed a unique and distinctive visual language based on traditional pottery. Her clay figures combine human, animal, and fantastical elements and seem to bridge the gap between local culture and her own spiritual world. She gained international recognition in 1989, in particular, through her participation in the groundbreaking exhibition *Magiciens de la Terre* in Paris. Since then, her work has been presented worldwide in major institutions and exhibitions. In 2026, Seyni Awa Camara will be featured posthumously in the Central Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Her idiosyncratic ceramics will thus once again occupy a significant place in the international discourse on contemporary art from Africa. Auction time: November 6, 2026, 2:15 p.m.
