Pégues, head of the Catholic mission in Santorini from 1824 to 1837, authored this important work. His book does not deal only with the geology of the volcanic island but also includes several chapters on the history of Santorini, the original Jesuit mission there, and the efforts to establish a Turkish presence in the 18th century.
