Tall 8vo, modern leather over boards. Text with some scattered spotting in a few pages. Complete: [8], 667 p., and one folding map of Santorini by a French military officer. Ex-libris of the Manoir de Roncheville and of the famous Petritzi collection. Overall in very good condition. Pégues, head of the Catholic mission in Santorini from 1824 to 1837, authored this important work. His book does not deal only with the geology of the volcanic island but also includes several chapters on the history of Santorini, the original Jesuit mission there, and the efforts to establish a Turkish presence in the 18th century. The final part offers a description of Greek society after Independence.The first detailed account of Santorini island. An important work. References: Blackmer 1278
