He set sail for the Levant in February 1686 in the turmoil of the Venetian campaigns in Greece. He provides a very early description of the Ottoman Crete and focuses on the devastation of the island, he had also visited Constantinople, mainland Greece and many islands of the Ionian and Aegean seas as well Cyprus. Veryard paid careful attention to the local religions, customs, manners and environment of the people he encountered. He documented everything, from local governance to regional proverbs and physical folklore.
