Dutch School Boy Blowing Bubble Oil on Board Painting Early 20th century Artist/designer/manufacturer: Unidentified artist; in the manner of the 17th-century Dutch or Flemish School. Distributed by Colby’s (Chicago, Illinois). Materials: Oil on wood panel, housed in a gilded wood frame. Marking(s): Front: Unsigned / no visible signature. Reverse: Small brass inventory tag pinned to the upper frame reading "COLBY'S / D 10638". Handwritten inventory numbers on the wood panel read "295 / 10638" and "9566". Cataloguer's notes: This painting is an antique genre piece depicting a young boy blowing a soap bubble, a classic Dutch Golden Age allegory known as Homo Bulla ("Man is a bubble") used to symbolize the fragility and brevity of life. The artwork utilizes heavy chiaroscuro lighting, pulling the warm flesh tones of the subject out of a dark, opaque background. The back features a registry badge from Colby's, a historic, high-end furniture retailer based in Chicago. Colby's shortened its commercial name to strictly "Colby's" in the mid-1940s and frequently imported fine art, mirrors, and European antiques for their luxury showrooms. Frame H 16.5" x W 13.5" Painting (in frame): H 13.25" x W 10" Good condition with some minor wear to frame. Some lines through painting.
