ENTRANCE. — This is the order that was observed at the new and joyful entrance of the most illustrious, most excellent, and most powerful Prince, the Most Christian King Henry II of that name, made in his good city and metropolis of Paris, capital of his Kingdom, on the sixteenth day of June 1549. Paris, Jehan Dallier, n.d. [1549]. In-4, red morocco, Jansenist style, interior lace, gilt edges (Chambolle-Duru). First edition of one of the most beautiful royal entry books in France. A copy from one of the two print runs under the name of Jean Dallier. This official booklet is dedicated to the solemn entry of Henry II and Catherine de’ Medici into Paris in 1549 and provides a description of the decorations, ornaments, and monuments erected along the procession’s route in honor of the royal couple. The illustrations, formerly attributed to Geoffroy Tory and Jean Cousin, and now attributed to Jean Goujon, a sculptor of the Fontainebleau School, consist of 11 large woodcuts within or outside the text, 10 of which depict architecture. The figure depicting a horseman is considered one of the masterpieces of 16th-century woodcut art. It is also one of the most famous images in French Renaissance iconography, particularly because some believe they can discern in the armor of the caparisoned horse the origin of the motifs found on so-called “fanfare” book bindings, a style that emerged in the middle of the century. (Brun, pp. 179–180; Mortimer, *French Books*, no. 202.) A copy bound in Chambolle-Duru morocco, with no mention of provenance. The plate inserted between g3 and g4 is a facsimile, as are the fold-out section extending the plate in C4 and the upper part of the obelisk. Minor restoration at the bottom of plate d1. The engraving on folio e3 (horseman) is slightly trimmed on the side. Slight rubbing along the raised bands. Expert: Mr. Dominique Courvoisier
