[In the colophon]: Nuremberg, Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer & Sebastian Kammermaister, July 12, 1493. Folio, brown morocco, gilt frame decorated with a five-line border, decorated spine, gilt edges (19th-century English binding). HC, 14508. - Schreiber, no. 5203. - Goff, S307. - GW, M40784. First edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle. Composed in Latin by the physician and humanist Hartmann Schedel (1440–1514), the Nuremberg Chronicle is one of the most important German books of the 15th century and remains undoubtedly the most famous of the incunabula, particularly due to the scope of its editorial project and the quality of its production. The work is presented as a universal chronicle of world history, from the Creation through the second half of the 15th century. In it, the author discusses the founding of the Church, secular history, antiquity, historical and legendary events, discoveries, and more. Printed in Gothic type in two columns, the edition is illustrated with 1,809 portraits, subjects, maps, and city views—including those of Germany, which are remarkable for their accuracy—executed by Michel Wolgemuth, Dürer’s master, and by Wilhelm Pleydenwurff; 2 double-page maps, a world map, and a map of Northern and Central Europe are included in the pagination. A very attractive copy, with wide margins, preserved in a morocco case signed A. Oldach & Son Holland P.A. Engraved coat-of-arms bookplates by Thomas Streatfeild of Chart’s Edge and Peter Hardy. Minor marginal or corner repairs on folios LXXII, CLXXI, CLXXXIII, and CLXXXVII. Restored hinges; slight scuffing on the binding. Appraiser: Mr. Dominique Courvoisier
