429 - A Buddhist painting of Amida Nyorai in his "skillful means" manifest form (Hōben Hosshin Sonkei) Hōben Hosshin Sonkei' is a representative iconographic form of Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha) in Jōdo Shinshū, depicting the Buddha's Dharma-body as manifested in visible form as a skillful means (hōben) to save all sentient beings. Characterised by radiating light emanating from the halo, a standing pose with the hand forming the mudra of welcoming (raigō-in), and a stance upon a lotus pedestal set among clouds, this iconographic type was widely used as the principal image of worship in Jōdo Shinshū temples and households. The present work follows this traditional composition, depicting Amida Nyorai standing on a lotus pedestal amid clouds, set against a backdrop of radiating light.
