PATEK PHILIPPE GENEVE Model: "Cioccolatone" Ref. 2540/2 Year: 1960 Case: No. 2*** in 18-karat rose gold with triangular lugs Dial: silvered with applied hour markers and central seconds hand Movement: No. 7### manual-winding mechanical cal. 27SC Strap: leather with an 18-karat rose gold buckle Accessories: Archive Extract Markings: dial, case, crown, movement, and buckle Dimensions: 31.5 x 31.5 mm (excluding lugs) Reference 2540 represented a significant innovation, as it was the first square-shaped automatic wristwatch produced between 1954 and 1960 with the legendary caliber 12-600AT (the same as ref. 2526) and featuring a small seconds sub-dial at the 6 o’clock position. The case was crafted by master watchmakers Ponti Gennari; although compact (31.5 mm), its design appeared more imposing thanks to its square shape and distinctive triangular lugs. Most examples are in yellow gold; those in rose gold and white gold are rare. The model featured in the catalog, in addition to having a rose-gold case, is the rarest version of this reference, featuring the manual-winding Cal. 27SC manual-winding movement and a central seconds hand; it is also in extraordinary condition, having been manufactured in 1960 and sold in 1961, as confirmed by the archive extract.
