[DIRECTORY]. ANONYMOUS. Circa 1799. Against Jacobinism, etc. Amay and Bodegnée, n.p., 1799. Double-sided folio leaflet. An anonymous handwritten text opposing Jacobinism. The text condemns a series of laws, all of which are detailed in the margins. It expresses frustration with taxation, opposes military conscription, and condemns attacks on the Catholic Church. The author likely hailed from the Liège region, according to the note on the second verso: “At the outset of the Revolution [1789], accounts of what took place in Amay and at the municipality of Bodegnée.” Excerpts: “Alas, what has become of that delightful time, when the innocent people lived content and happy; That sweet century is no more; the merciless heavens have spewed abominable monsters upon the earth; ceaselessly we are told, ‘Long live Liberty, long live the Republic; and Equality’”—“Since in this place, once so comfortable for us all, —where injustice and theft are now all the rage—may this government be cursed by God—may our Liberty have neither faith nor place—let us at least seek some cave or some rock – Where neither the bailiff nor justice can ever reach us.” – Lightly yellowed and faded paper, but otherwise well preserved.
