Friedrich Johann Reusch, Siegländer Bergmann und Siegerländer Hüttenwerker, two bronze sculptures, Königsberg c. 1890 Friedrich Johann Reusch, 1843 Siegen - 1906 Girgenti/ Sicily, German sculptor and university teacher in Königsberg, here: Siegländer Bergmann and Siegerländer Hüttenwerker, bronze with brown patina, on stone base, height 22/ 21 cm (without base), signed and inscribed Königsberg on the plinth. About the artist: Johann Friedrich Reusch studied at the Berlin Academy of Art from 1863 to 1867 and worked in Albert Wolff's studio from 1866 to 1872 on his monument to Friedrich Wilhelm III and the relief for the Berlin Victory Column. In 1872, he received a scholarship from the Michael Beer Foundation to travel to Italy and lived in Rome from 1872 to 1874. He then set up his own business in Berlin. From 1881, he taught as a professor at the Königsberg Academy of Art, which he ultimately also headed as director. The Faculty of Philosophy at the Albertus University in Königsberg awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 1904, he was forced to give up teaching due to a heart condition that had already arisen in 1900. Friedrich Reusch died in 1906 while on a holiday in Sicily. From the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, depictions of the working population were very popular. These sculptures of labourers represent the zeitgeist of the Industrial Revolution. Johann Friedrich Reusch (1843-1906) is best known for his large sculptures. Monuments designed by him can be found throughout Germany.
