John Charles Maggs, *Royal Mail Coach Stopping At An Inn*, oil painting from 1873, framed John Charles Maggs 1819 - Barth - 1896, a British painter of the Victorian era who became famous above all for his detailed and vivid depictions of post coaches and historic inns; here: A Royal post coach with four men stops in front of a seaside inn; two men tend to the horses, oil on canvas, 34 x 68 cm, signed and dated 1873 on the right-hand side, framed About the artist: At a time when the railway was increasingly supplanting traditional horse-drawn carriages, John Charles Maggs’s works catered to a deep longing for England’s ‘romantic past’. He established himself as an artist devoted almost exclusively to a single, highly specialised subject: Stagecoaches at coaching inns. He painted a famous series of over 80 historic coaching inns in both rural and urban areas (including famous London inns such as ‘La Belle Sauvage’ and ‘The Old White Hart’). Also popular were his depictions of coaches in the depths of winter (“Mail Coach in Snow”), the traditional horse race at Newmarket, and historical events such as “The News of Waterloo”. Many of his subjects also feature streetscapes of his home town of Bath and surrounding towns such as Bristol and Cheltenham.
