Margarete Hoenerbach, Floral Still Life with a Bird’s Nest, a rare oil painting from 1886, in a gilded stucco frame Margarete Hoenerbach, 1848 Cologne - 1924 Berlin, painter, graphic artist and sculptor, pioneer of German women’s art, shown here: Lifelike still life featuring cowslips, delicate spring flowers and a moss-covered birds’ nest with eggs against a dark, atmospheric background; oil on wood, 18.5 x 26.5 cm, signed and dated on the right 1886, in a gilded stucco frame. A rarity; paintings by Margarete Hoenerbach are extremely rarely offered on the art market. About the artist: Margarete Hoenerbach trained privately under Otto Rethel and Alfred Hertel in Düsseldorf and, following stays in Paris and Italy, settled in Berlin. She initially devoted herself to portrait, still life and landscape painting. In 1868, the Drawing and Painting School of the Association of Berlin Women Artists was founded as the first public institution where women could receive a fundamental and systematic artistic education. Women were not admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts until 1919. In 1891, the Association and the School of Drawing and Painting established themselves as a permanent institution within Berlin’s art scene, thanks to generous subsidies from the Prussian Ministry of Culture. The Secessionists Philipp Franck, Hans Baluschek, Ludwig Dettmann, Martin Brandenburg, Ulrich Hübner, George Mosson and Franz Skarbina were associated with the Association of Women Artists either as teachers at the School of Drawing and Painting or as honorary members. From 1892 to 1909, Margarete Hoenerbach was appointed to the post of director. Her notable pupils inter alia included Paula Modersohn-Becker (who graduated in 1896) and Käthe Kollwitz (who graduated in 1897).
