Li Tiemei, a character actress in the revolutionary Peking Opera *The Red Lantern* and a working-class girl with a fish; two Chinese porcelain figurines, circa 1965-70 The daughter of the murdered railway worker Li Yuhe uses the lantern to relay messages to underground fighters in the mountains (height 27.5 cm); the story is set in 1939 under Japanese occupation and ultimately leads to victory over the Japanese army. ‘The Red Lantern’ was one of the six operas that Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing, declared to be essential to revolutionary art; also included is a revolutionary working-class girl carrying a fish on a plate, a propagandistic symbol of diligence and abundance (height 31 cm), both porcelain pieces with bold colouration
