Marian Stec, “Sucha Wydma” (Dune Landscape) and Landscape, 2 large oil paintings from 1991 and 2003, framed Marian Stec, 1929 Marynin - 2023, Landscapes in bright colours, oil on canvas, 80 x 100 cm and 74 x 101 cm, each signed, one inscribed ‘Sucha Wydma’, dated 2003 and 1991, each on a stretcher About the artist: Stec was a Polish painter who was very closely associated with the art scenes in Sopot and Gdańsk. He is regarded as one of the earliest exponents of Sopot Colourism, a movement strongly influenced by the French École de Paris and the Polish Kapists. He began his art studies in 1950 at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Sopot. In 1956, he graduated with a diploma in painting. In the meantime, the academy had been relocated to Gdańsk. For 22 years he worked as a painting teacher at the State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Gdynia-Orłowo, five of which he spent as headmaster of the institution. An individualist, he shunned competitions and large group exhibitions. He pursued his artistic practice through solo exhibitions or within small groups of artists, in which the artist’s individuality remains evident. In his works, elements of nature are interwoven, thereby evoking associations, moods and messages suggested by the artist. Light and colour are the central elements of his paintings.
