At that time, the art scene in Hamburg was primarily shaped by figurative Expressionism, whose ‘fathers’ were Emil Nolde and Edvard Munch. Alongside their followers, a small group had formed that championed a freer form of abstraction, rooted in Rudolf Steiner’s theosophical thought. Consequently, he followed a similar path to the ‘Informel’ artists, such as Gerhard Hoehme, Bernard Schultze, Emil Schumacher and Hann Trier. Member of the ZEN 49 artists’ group alongside Willi Baumeister, Rolf Cavael, Gerhard Fietz, Rupprecht Geiger, Willy Hempel, Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff and Fritz Winter. From 1965 to 1990, Sonderborg was Professor of Painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, with interruptions (leaves of absence) from 1969 to 1973 as a visiting professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and, in 1986, as a visiting professor at the Art Institute of Chicago.
