Bernard Schultze, “Circe”, oil painting from 1980 in museum format (195 x 250 cm) Bernard Schultze, 1915 Schneidemühl - 2005 Cologne, one of the most significant German painters and object artists of post-war modernism, is regarded as a founding father of German Informel; shown here: “Circe”, large-format Informel composition, oil on canvas, 195 x 250 cm, signed and dated on the right 1980, inscribed, signed and dated on the reverse. Provenance: Galerie Wilbrand, Cologne About the artist: After the Second World War, Bernard Schultze radically revitalised the German art scene by placing the unconscious and gestural abstraction at the centre of his work. In 1952, together with Karl Otto Götz, Otto Greis and Heinz Kreutz, he founded the avant-garde artists’ group ‘Quadriga’ in Frankfurt. This marked the birth of German Informel, representing a radical break with figurative painting. From 1961 onwards, Schultze expanded his two-dimensional paintings into three-dimensional space. He created whimsical, sculptural figures from wire, textiles and thick paint, which he onomatopoeically named ‘Migofs’. Bernard Schultze took part in the documenta in Kassel on three occasions (1959, 1964 and 1977).
