Georg Meistermann, Abstract Composition, signed colour screen print, c. 1960 Georg Meistermann, 1911 Solingen - 1990 Cologne, German painter, draughtsman and graphic artist, shown here: Abstract Composition, inspired by the ‘colour-field painting’ of Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, colour silkscreen print, 25.5 x 21 cm (image), 43 x 30 cm (sheet), numbered 152/200, signed on the right, mounted on a passepartout, in very good condition About the artist: From 1930 to 1933, Georg Meistermann studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Werner Heuser, Heinrich Nauen and Ewald Mataré. During the Nazi era, he was forced to interrupt his studies and was banned from exhibiting. After the war, his first solo exhibition took place in 1946 at the ‘Studio’ of the Wuppertal Municipal Museum. In 1947, he was one of the founding members of the Neue Rheinische Sezession. This was followed by his appointment to the Städelschule in Frankfurt. His participation in documenta 1 in 1955 was followed by his appointment to the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Georg Meistermann also took part in documenta II in Kassel and taught at the Karlsruhe Art Academy from 1960 onwards.
