Friedrich Ludwig, Expressive Landscape with House, mixed media, c. 1930, framed Friedrich Ludwig, 1895 Wieslet - 1970 Gabersee near Wasserburg, German ‘degenerate’ Expressionist painter, considered part of the ‘Lost Generation’; here: A colouristically sophisticated, expressive landscape featuring a ‘half’ house, with three trees in the foreground, mixed media, c. 1930, approx. 48 x 34 cm, signed on the right, framed with a passepartout (overall: 68 x 54 cm) About the artist. From 1922 to 1926, Friedrich Ludwig studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main; in 1926, he was admitted to the renowned Académie Julian in Paris. The period from 1928 to 1930, during which he was surrounded by and influenced by the Parisian artists, is regarded as Ludwig’s most creative period. In 1934, his first official exhibition in Munich was declared ‘un-German’ by the National Socialists and banned. In 1935, the Neupert Gallery in Zurich offered Ludwig an exhibition of his works. He turned down an offer to remain in Switzerland following this successful exhibition and subsequently travelled via Bellinzona to the Adriatic, on to Paris, and via Wieslet back to Bad Reichenhall, where he settled in 1940. Following Germany’s surrender in 1945, he was granted permission by the Americans to paint again without restrictions. In 1956, Friedrich Ludwig exhibited two of his works in Munich alongside the ‘Der Blaue Reiter’ group (Gabriele Münter, Marianne von Werefkin, W. Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke, Paul Klee, Max Ackermann inter alia). In the 1990s, the Friedrich Ludwig Museum was opened in his birthplace, Wieslet, and Friedrich’s works were made accessible to the public
