Paul Kleinschmidt, Red Mallows in a Vase, watercolour from 1927 Paul Kleinschmidt, 1883 Bublitz - 1949 Bensheim, a leading German painter and printmaker of Classical Modernism, whose powerful style oscillates between Expressionism, Realism and New Objectivity; here: Still Life with Red Mallows in a Vase on a Red Cloth, watercolour, gouache on heavy paper, 57.5 x 33 cm, one tear at the top edge and a few minor tears at the edges, neatly secured with gallery tape; monogrammed on the left ‘P. KL’ and dated 1927 About the artist: Paul Kleinschmidt studied at the art academies in Berlin (under Anton von Werner) and Munich (under Heinrich von Zügel). From as early as 1909, he exhibited with the Berlin Secession and found an early admirer of his art in Lovis Corinth. From the late 1920s onwards, the Bilger brothers and the New York collector Erich Cohn forged a close relationship with him, which led to his works also being appreciated in the USA. Under the National Socialists, his art was deemed ‘degenerate’. Following periods spent in the Netherlands and France, he was forcibly repatriated in 1943 and banned from painting. Kleinschmidt exhibitions were held in Tübingen in 1968 and 1997, in Ulm in 1978 and 2003, in Stuttgart in 1983, in 2004 in Würzburg, in 2009 in Regensburg and in 2011 in Senden. In 2019, the Museum Bensheim staged an exhibition featuring previously unseen ink drawings to mark the 70th anniversary of Kleinschmidt’s death.
