He then trained as a restorer. From 1955 to 1964, he headed the restoration workshop at the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Krefeld, and subsequently, until 1977, the restoration studios at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. From 1977 to 1994, he was Professor of Painting Techniques at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
