He began his studies in 1924 at the Frankfurt School of Art, specialising in typography and applied graphics. Just two years later, he was appointed as a lecturer at the local vocational commercial school. Alongside this, he worked as a commercial artist. In 1930-31, Cavael settled in Berlin as a freelance artist and commercial artist and became acquainted with Wassily Kandinsky, who influenced his painting and with whom he corresponded in the years that followed. In the spring of 1933, Cavael’s first exhibition (a joint exhibition with Bauhaus master Josef Albers at Braunschweig Castle) was closed down by the National Socialists shortly after it opened. As an abstract painter, he was banned from exhibiting. After the end of the war, Rolf Cavael officially resumed his artistic work. In 1949, he was one of the founders of the ZEN 49 group.
