[Mohandas Gandhi] Ramprasad Vyas Autograph Letter Signed: "Your information about Gandhij abandoning the old concepts of non-violence is entirely wrong" ALS signed “Ramprasad Vyas,” one page, 6.5 x 8.5, Sevagram letterhead, January 16, 1947. Handwritten letter to Dr. Schyman Nussbaum in New York, in part: "Your letter dated 26th December '46 to Gandhij has been read in which you wrote '...you are considering abandoning the old concepts of non-violence...' Please let me tell you that your information about Gandhij abandoning the old concepts of non-violence is entirely wrong. On the contrary he is touring on foot in the much disturbed area of East Bengal as a peace-maker with his message of love, non-violence, and universal brotherhood. And for this work he has suspended all his other activities. He is not attending even to his correspondence. He has full confidence in his non-violence." In fine condition. Ramprasad Vyas was a longtime assistant to Mahatma Gandhi, serving first as his cook and later as a personal secretary. Written amid the communal crisis that preceded Indian independence and partition, the letter reflects Gandhi’s personal intervention in East Bengal, where Hindu-Muslim violence had intensified during 1946. Rather than retreat from his principles, Gandhi traveled through the affected districts on foot, preaching nonviolence, reconciliation, and religious unity while setting aside much of his other work. His campaign for communal peace continued through independence and partition in 1947, and remained central to his public mission until his assassination on January 30, 1948.
