Alice Stone Blackwell (1857-1950) was an American suffragist, journalist, and women's rights advocate, and the daughter of prominent reformers Lucy Stone and Henry Browne Blackwell. She joined the Woman’s Journal after graduating from Boston University and eventually assumed primary editorial responsibility for the newspaper. Blackwell also helped reconcile the rival American Woman Suffrage Association and National Woman Suffrage Association, which united in 1890 as the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Henry Browne Blackwell (1825-1909) was an American suffragist, abolitionist, and social reformer who devoted much of his life to the campaign for women's voting rights. The husband of pioneering suffragist Lucy Stone and father of Alice Stone Blackwell, he helped organize the American Woman Suffrage Association and, with Stone, founded the influential Woman’s Journal in Boston in 1870, the same year this certificate was issued.
