Constable, Canaletto: Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768,Oxford, 1976, vol. 2, cat. no. 179, pp. 272–273).Santa Maria della Salute was built in thanksgiving for thedeliverance of Venice from the devastating plague of 1630. Each year, on 21November, the Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin, the Doge of Venice madea ceremonial visit to the church to renew the city’s thanks to the Virgin. Hecan be distinguished in the procession by his yellow tunic and distinctive corno,the traditional horn-shaped ducal hat.
