95 - VOLTAIRE. *La Henriade*. London [Rouen?], 1728. Large quarto in brown calfskin, with rolled-edge borders and cold-stamped corner tools on the covers, spine with blonde sheepskin raised bands decorated with cold stamping, dark brown morocco title label, edges speckled in red (contemporary binding); (1) blank leaf, frontispiece, (3) leaves, 10 pp. of list of subscribers, 202 pp., 10 plates out of text, (1) blank leaf. Spine of the binding likely re-bound in the late 19th century, restoration to one corner, missing part of the title label, a few faint, light foxing spots, mainly in the top margin, 2 brown stains on pages 3 and 4 of the list of subscribers. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Printed on heavy laid paper, it contains a FRONTISPICE by de Troy, a FLEURON on the title page designed by Michaux, 10 BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS by de Troy, Lemoine, and Vleughels, 10 vignettes drawn by Michaux, and 10 end-paper illustrations. “This deluxe edition, the first to bear the title ‘La Henriade,’ is also the first to have been carefully corrected and revised by Voltaire. It features a text that sometimes differs from that of the 1723 edition and subsequent ones, and throughout, this text is much more accurate. This beautiful edition can therefore be considered the first truly authentic one. Voltaire, who had been in England for nearly two years, dedicated it to the queen of that country, whose liberal institutions he admired. […] The vignette at the beginning of the “Third Song” contains a medallion portrait of Queen Elizabeth of England. ” (Le Petit). Copy from the LIBRARY of Thomas KYNASTON, with an old heraldic bookplate bearing the motto “Deus est nobis sol et ensis.” ¶ Le Petit, 535 - Bengesco, I-365 - Cohen, 1025.
