MORERI (Louis). The Great Historical Dictionary, or A Curious Blend of Sacred and Secular History; containing, in abridged form, the lives and remarkable deeds... Eighteenth edition... Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, 1740, 8 folio volumes. Pagination specific to each volume. Bound in cherry-colored half-basane, with corner pieces and a ribbed spine. (Contemporary bindings). - A few uniformly yellowed quires, a few slightly worn caps, one split joint, spine leather slightly rubbed. Engraved frontispiece. This is the penultimate edition of this famous work. The first, which was also the only one published during the author’s lifetime, appeared in Lyon in 1674. It consisted of a single volume. The Dictionary was reprinted with additions by Parayre, S. Ussan, Vaultier, and Dupin. This 8-volume edition, published in Amsterdam, was edited by Platel. It is significantly expanded over the previous 6-volume edition with a revised supplement by Abbé Goujet and new entries.
